The Rolex Oyster was the world’s first waterproof watch. This was demonstrated in 1927 when Mercedes Gleitze wore one as she attempted to be the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
That event also marked the starting point of one of the world’s most successful brand positioning strategies. Since Gleitze’s swim – which was followed by people all over the world – countless athletes and other celebrities have been seen wearing Rolex watches. The brand is immediately recognised, even by the majority of the world’s population, i.e. those poor souls who are not obsessed by watches! It is associated with success and luxury – a status symbol for the rich and famous. All of this means that the second-hand value of a well-preserved Rolex is unbeatable.
The example we now have in stock is in very good to excellent overall condition and comes on its original bracelet, which true to its age is a second-generation Oyster bracelet (with folded, not riveted links). It comes in its original wooden box and also the outer Rolex carton, which is still intact but worn around the edges.
This watch has drilled lugholes so changing straps is a breeze and it just looks really, really good on a leather strap, so we’ll include a black, very soft calf leather strap from the Austrian premium watch strap maker Hirsch as well.
